Our School Campus:

Tierra Buena is a natural classroom in the courtyard of Lowell School in Phoenix, Arizona.  It was the vision of teachers, students, parents and business partners.  We were granted two Heritage Grants and given many donations of products, plants and labor to see our dream come true.  Tierra Buena gives us all many opportunities for learning, thinking, collaborating and simply a special place to enjoy nature in the middle of the city.

The Pond
Our pond brings a riparian area to Tierra Buena. Many activities focus around the water and the life it sustains. The students take the responsibility of maintaining the balance of life by taking care of the plants and animals.

The Ramada

When Tierra Buena was in the planning stages, our students requested a Ramada be part of the plan.  Its pillars were designed and tiled by students.  It was truly a labor of love.  Now we have a special place to conduct lessons, read, work or just relax after a long day at school.

The Gardens

Our gardens produce many foods for us to enjoy and keep us healthy.  They allow the students the opportunity to prepare the soil, plant the seeds, care for the plants and harvest the fruits and vegetables they grow and nurture.  This is the best way to experience a mini farm in the heart of the city.

The many ways we use the habitat:

-  To observe our environment

-  To write about our world

-  To investigate nature

-  To bring math into the real world

-  To grow our food

-  To share our experiences with others

-  To make science real

"Our garden oasis in the heart of the city."
