Frequently Asked Questions for Families 2022-2023 School Year

Who is eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine?
Anyone 12 years of age and older is eligible to get COVID-19 vaccine.
- People Age 12 to 17 can only receive the Pfizer vaccine
- People Age 18 and Older can receive the Moderna, Pfizer or Johnson and Johnson (Janssen) vaccines.

Where can I get the COVID-19 vaccination?
Free vaccination events are hosted frequently throughout the City of Phoenix. To find a vaccine location, visit https://www.maricopa.gov/5659/COVID-19-Vaccine-Locations for locations, dates, and times. Individuals may attend a vaccination event at Grant Park, 701 S. 3rd Ave., on Tuesdays from 4-8 p.m. through the month of July. Phoenix Elementary District partners with local agencies to offer vaccination events. As those events are scheduled, we will inform staff and parents through emails, phone calls, websites, and on all school Peachjar flyerboards. In addition, the district is partnering with Wesley Community Center to provide health and medical services for students and staff through their mobile health clinic. Services will include COVID vaccinations and testing. Additional information will be shared with staff and students in the near future.

Are face masks/coverings required?
The district strongly encourages students and staff to wear face masks/coverings while in school buildings, but they are not required according to A.R.S. 15-342.05.

Are masks required on school buses?
Students and staff must wear face masks on school buses, and put it on prior to boarding the bus. In accordance with the CDC Order, any operator or passenger traveling on a conveyance (including all road vehicles including school buses) within the United States are required to wear a face mask, unless otherwise exempted. Where possible, seating will be arranged in alternate fashion with maximum distance between riders. Siblings and same household members will be seated together.

Are masks available at school for students and staff?
Masks are available at all schools and facilities.

Will students be doing both online and in-person lessons using Zoom?
No, for students attending in-person all instruction will be face-to-face. Families wishing to remain in the online learning format can enroll in our newest online school, the Phoenix iAcademy.

Will PEER be offered?
PEER will be offered to families in the afternoon only and PEER will start a few weeks after the beginning of the school year; however, cohorting and grouping students is not possible in the PEER program. The District will emphasize the importance of maintaining a safe physical distance, and students are strongly encouraged to wear face masks.

Will sports and extracurricular activities be offered?
Sports and extracurricular activities will be offered and will have a delayed start date. The district is working with partners to determine which sports can be offered safely. Additional information will be shared with families in the near future. Cohorting and grouping students is not possible with sports and extracurricular activities. The District will emphasize the importance of maintaining a safe physical distance, and students are strongly encouraged to wear face masks.

Will students remain in groups/cohorts while on campus?
Yes, students will be grouped into cohorts that remain together throughout the school day and will not intermingle with other groups. Students will have assigned seats in classrooms and on buses.

Will students be physically distanced at school?
Students will maintain a 3-foot minimum physical distance between one another and with district employees whenever possible.

Will students have field trips?
Field trips are permitted for local trips and for field trip locations that follow the appropriate safety protocols.

Will students have recess on the playground?
Students will have recess. Cohorts will be maintained during recess, and playground equipment may be used on an individual cohort basis. Recess kits are available for individual cohorts, and activities that allow students to maintain physical distancing will be used during recess.

Where will students eat breakfast and lunch?
Breakfast will be served in the classroom and students may eat lunch in either classrooms or cafeterias. If cafeterias are used, students will be seated with their cohorts and at a 6-ft. distance from one another while eating. Schools may choose to have students eat outside. Students should be seated with their cohorts and maintain a 3-ft. distance from one another while eating outside.

Will my child be able to participate in special area classes like band, chorus, art, and PE?
Special area classes can convene in person with safety guidelines depending on the class, school, and available space. Schools will develop their plans to safely offer these classes in-person.

How often will the campus be cleaned?
High-touch surfaces will be cleaned and disinfected at least once per day.

Are visitors allowed on campus?
Nonessential visitors and volunteers are discouraged in school buildings and classrooms. Essential visitors are strongly encouraged to wear masks. They also must undergo health screenings and follow the standard sign-in procedures in the front office.

What happens if my child is exposed to COVID-19 while at school?
- If the student was within 6 feet of a person with COVID-19 for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period or had physical contact with a person with COVID-19, the student must stay home in quarantine for 14 days. Individuals are encouraged to be tested for COVID-19.
- Individuals who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 do not have to quarantine if they meet all of the following criteria:
- it has been at least 2 weeks since their final dose, and
- they have had no symptoms since their COVID-19 exposure
- Documentation of vaccination may be required

How often are school buses disinfected?
High-touch surfaces on school buses will be disinfected twice daily, including prior to picking up the first passenger on each route.

What if my child tests positive for COVID-19?
Student must stay home for 10 calendar days from the date symptoms first appeared, is fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication, and other symptoms have improved before returning to school.

What if my child has symptoms, but tests negative for COVID-19?
Students may return to campus after they have not had a fever for 24 hours (without the use of fever-reducing medicines) and other symptoms have improved.

If my child is exposed to, or tests positive, for COVID-19, how will he/she learn?
Your school is developing contingency plans to support learning for students who may need to miss school because of COVID-19. In the event your child is exposed or tests positive, please work with your campus to access learning plans for your child.
