Maricopa County School Superintendent Steve Watson visited Garfield Elementary School for special book readings on Thursday, September 21, 2023.
Ms. McEvoy's 7th-Grade Class
He visited Emma McEvoy’s 7th-grade class to read Alice and Greta by Steven J. Simmons, about the power of words, their ability to come back to the speaker, and the golden rule of treating others with kindness.
Ms. Schulze's 3rd-Grade Class
Mr. Watson then read Jabari Jumps to Dani Schulze’s 3rd-grade class, a story by Gaia Cornwall about self-management and overcoming fear.
Each student was gifted a copy of the book they were read, on the one condition that they promise to read it aloud to a friend or family member. Both stories offer lessons in Social Emotional Learning.
Steve Watson has been reading to students throughout Maricopa County classrooms as part of his "Mr. Watson's Book Club" program and chose our Garfield teachers after they submitted their classes' favorite picturebooks.
