Important Update: Social Media Trend and School Safety

September 17, 2024
Dear Phoenix #1 Families,

At the Phoenix Elementary School District, we take our responsibility to provide a safe and nurturing educational environment for all students and staff with the utmost seriousness. We are following up on last week’s communication regarding a concerning social media trend affecting schools nationwide. In response to unsubstantiated reports of social media threats aimed at our schools, we want to share important updates with you.

False information about potential school shooting threats is being spread across Arizona and the nation through social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat. While we understand these reports may cause concern, we assure you that the safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority. These posts are designed to create fear and disruption by spreading false threats.

We must work together to address this issue. Please talk to your student(s) about the seriousness of sharing or reposting such messages. Across the Valley, law enforcement agencies have begun arresting individuals and pressing charges against those responsible for making or circulating threats. We want to ensure everyone is aware of the potential legal consequences of participating in these actions.

Phoenix #1 remains vigilant in its commitment to school safety. We treat every potential threat with seriousness and work closely with law enforcement agencies to investigate and hold individuals accountable for any actions that may compromise our school community’s security.

At this time, we want to reassure you that our campuses are safe, and no credible threats have been identified.

By coming together as a community, we can continue to ensure that Phoenix #1 schools remain safe, welcoming, and supportive environments for all students and staff.

Sincerely,

Deborah Gonzalez, Ed.D.
Superintendent
