Athletics That Build Character
We are proud to offer our students the chance to participate in district-sponsored team sports free of charge. We focus on fostering strong character in students, encouraging them to be well-disciplined and respectful players. We also want to increase student achievement through sports. Integrated into the sports program, are the tenets of character building that include trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
Fifth and Sixth Grade Sports
The current sports clubs offered at the fifth and sixth-grade level are:
- The Hoopsters Club – Basketball
- The Volley Club – Volleyball
- The Sluggers Club – Slow Pitch
- The Goal Getters Club – Soccer
- The Gridiron Club – Flag Football
The emphasis of the club-level sports is to prepare the students to play at the competitive level once they reach 7thand 8th grade.
The 5/6 grade club level sports have three areas of focus:
- Homework/Study Session (30 minutes), developing good study habits and learning how to be a good student-athlete.
- Sports Career Exploration (30 minutes), researching career interests within the realm of sports outside of being an athlete.
- Fundamental Skills (60 minutes), sport-specific skill development in a particular sport being offered at that time.
Seventh and Eighth Grade Sports
Seventh and eighth-grade students have the opportunity to participate in the following competitive sports programs:
- Co-Ed Soccer
- Co-Ed Slow Pitch
- Boys and Girls Basketball
- Co-Ed Volleyball
- Co-Ed Flag Football
Students who participate in our Junior High athletic program will compete amongst other schools in Phoenix #1 for regular season play and post-season playoffs to crown a district champion and runner-up. Following every regular season, the coaches from each team identify players to participate in a Phoenix #1 district-wide All-Star game where the Eastern All-Star team will play against the Western All-Star team. Championship rings and runner-up trophies are awarded to our top two teams. Gold and silver medals are awarded to our All-Star Teams. We also provide individual awards for the Season MVP, All-Star MVP, and Coach of the Year. The top two teams in our district also get an opportunity to play in an All-Valley Tournament that is hosted by Phoenix Union High School District. Schools from around the Valley and other districts send their top two teams to compete in the tournament to crown a State Champion.
