Fine & Performing Arts
-
Herrera School for the Arts offers a fine and performing arts K-8 program. The program features a full curriculum led by outstanding faculty with arts specializations that introduce students to drawing and painting, choir, instrumental music, dance, and theater as part of the core curriculum. Regular productions of plays and musicals, choir and instrumental music events bring the community together to celebrate the talents of our young scholar artists.
Dance
The dance program consists of learning fundamental movement principles, dance technique, and dance history. The four main genres of dance are modern, ballet, jazz and hip-hop. Dance helps build confidence by performing for an audience, self-expression by creating your own dances, and creativity by thinking and processing in a new way.
Drama
Drama class is a place where stories come to life! Students learn about plot, characters, visual elements, sound and voice, movement, subject, mood, and theme. As we dissect characters and stories, your student will practice becoming a variety of characters. Students will also learn about different styles and theater, including dramatization, pantomime, tableaux, and plays.
Choir and Musical Theater
The music program focuses on reading and performing music through singing, playing, ukulele, and movement. The students in the choir develop their singing voice and become better musicians while performing a variety of music. Students in Musical Theater have Broadway-style performances that include singing, dancing, and acting! The students get multiple performance opportunities, including in-school and outside-of-school performances.
Instrumental Music
The Herrera Instrumental Music Program offers various ensembles, performance opportunities, and fun learning music! From a string orchestra and concert band to chamber music and parade band, students embark on a year-long mission to grow musically through theory, fundamental technique, and performance. These courses provide an instrumental experience for students with an emphasis on developing performing skills and musicianship.
Visual Arts
The art program focuses on applying the elements and principles of art, history, and art presentation. We participate in several art exhibitions where student artwork is displayed. The students learn painting, drawing, 3-dimensional sculptures, ceramics, and printmaking.
